This record reconstructs the decisions registered during edition 003. Version `1.6.0` governed both the narrative method and the format of this explanation. The complete artefacts remain private: what follows provides public traceability, not an external audit or an objective measurement of literary quality.
Scientific starting point
The source was version 1 of *A spinal circuit for collective coordination*, by Laurence Picton and thirteen co-authors. The fidelity check confirmed identity, version, methods, reported results, inferences, and limitations. It neither reproduced the study nor independently validated its conclusions.
The paper combines physiological and behavioural experiments in zebrafish with a neuromechanical model and a robotic fish. It reports that a spinal proprioceptive circuit detects both self-generated bending and bending produced by neighbouring wakes, then adjusts swimming phase. When that circuit is disrupted, the fish retain locomotion but lose coordination, cohesion, and polarisation. In the model and robot, the loop is sufficient to synchronise with a wake and reduce energy use.
That sufficiency applies to simplified constructed systems. The authors note that the complete animal probably integrates vision, smell, hearing, lateral-line sensing, and descending signals, and that the results do not describe every species or collective behaviour.
Alternatives considered
Six possibilities covered five tension topologies and six progression modes. The selected one turned local coupling into a funeral rite: a living person produces the last wake that keeps her dead partner's suit in phase. The finalist imagined a creature returning to a human formation the hydrodynamic pattern the swimmers had emitted without noticing it.
The other four explored a city that migrates while asleep, a dance company exchanging spinal impulses, robots that draw a map none of them knows, and a formation forced to accommodate an unsynchronised rhythm. They lost on relative fit because of greater infrastructure, distance from the cohesion result, a return to professional verification, or the risk of overt allegory.
No alternative combined institutional authority, an urgent external clock, and professional sacrifice.
Prose probes
Two 500–700-word samples were written. Both passed B1 and B2. The selected probe changed Tovan's response from an apparent personal trait into a consequence of Roa continuing to swim ahead, and left a concrete decision open: prolong or break the wake. The finalist recontextualised a signal attributed to a creature as a transformed return of a human pattern.
The selected concept won by concentrating mechanism, relationship, and agency in two bodies. The finalist required six swimmers, a load, and a creature and carried a greater risk of progressing as a sequence of tests.
Adversarial-role evaluation
The first draft received `APROBADO_CON_CAMBIOS` (“approved with changes”). No critical failures were found. The evaluation identified four local problems: insufficient planting of how Roa perceived the body behind her, an apparent deadline created by oxygen and an intervention from Varo, the ritual rule concentrated in a single explanation, and contact resembling an embrace that simplified the climax.
The model-assisted evaluation adopted an adversarial role. Its scores were traceable editorial judgements, not objective measurements or independent human review.
Material changes
There was one complete rewrite, with no redesign or candidate switch. The final version:
- plants how Roa's spine perceives Tovan's correction;
- removes the order to finish and oxygen as a false countdown;
- shows the ritual rule through the other swimmers' departures before explaining it;
- adds a migration and an out-of-phase lamp to give Tovan's contradiction greater depth;
- replaces the accidental embrace with chosen contact that the suit registers as weight rather than rhythm;
- breaks the wake through an upward turn that omits the expected third impulse.
The circuits, half-beat delay, mineral particles, irregular gesture, and final unanswered movement were preserved.
Causal summary and resulting form
A suit converts curvature caused by a neighbouring wake into motor stimulation. After Tovan's death, his suit keeps his body behind Roa during a rite. She prolongs the circuits because each correction resembles a familiar response. Once she confirms that the body can no longer pull away as Tovan did when alive, Roa cuts the wake and accepts the cost of swimming alone.
The dominant topology is internal, with material friction. The mode is circular/recursive with recontextualisation. The literary wager lies in a relationship expressed as pressure between the shoulder blades and in a three-impulse gesture that changes function.
The observable footprint—ritual ocean, mourner without authority, no external clock, relational cost, iterative time, and a phase-breaking climax—differs from the two preceding institutional and urgent editions.
Registered controls
- CF1: the coordinated corpse and the suit appear in the opening and cause continued formation, bodily tests, and descent.
- CC1: the isolated evaluation reconstructed the novum, situation, decision, and cost in ordinary language.
- T1: Roa's contradiction produces comparable decisions; the material loop supplies friction and the cost becomes bodily.
- B2: both probes changed the situation or its interpretation and sustained a concrete expectation.
- J1: every circuit changes fact, knowledge, or meaning; the ending breaks the planted pattern.
- L1: a separate context evaluated only the final Spanish text and identified expectations at the 25%, 50%, and 75% cuts, functional repetitions, and a concrete payoff. L1 does not measure real-reader behaviour, taste, or desire.
- Bilingual QA: the adaptation preserves events, geometry, gesture, losses, functional ambiguity, mechanism, and outcome.
Limit of this record
The human suits, Lerna, the rite, the characters, their messages, and every specific behaviour and causal chain are fictional compositions. The paper neither describes nor predicts this technology and does not show that an equivalent circuit governs human coordination or movement after death.
This explanation does not publish complete drafts or internal instructions. Nor does it prove that the story will be enjoyed or that the paper is valid beyond its own scope.
