Twenty minutes of uplink remained when the farm’s cold loop began returning warm water.

Salma watched the temperature rise on the maintenance schematic and called Teo before the central system declared a fault. He answered from the cultivation gallery, breathless. He had started running when he saw the tomato stems leaning toward sprinklers that were no longer working.

“Go to the north manifold,” Salma said. “Take the long wrench.”

“Already here. What does Nexo say?”

The question came as naturally as asking someone to turn on a light.

Salma opened the remote assistant. During the uplink window, Nexo received all of Hestia’s telemetry: flow rates, vibration, coolant chemistry, and the sound of every pump. Its answer took less than a second.

*Bypass actuator seventeen remains partially open. Close manually and restart the secondary pump.*

Salma did not relay it.

In four days she would return to Earth. She had exceeded the radiation dose the insurer allowed for surface work and would not get another extension. Teo would fill her position for the next eight months. His record was flawless: one hundred and thirty-two interventions, no repeat failures, completion times sixteen percent better than Salma’s in her first year.

He had also requested help on almost every one before touching a tool.

“Tell me what you observe,” she said.

“Water entering at twenty-two degrees.”

“I can see that.”

“Then there are two of us seeing it.”

At the far end of the control room, Yun looked up. She ran production, not maintenance, but on Hestia such distinctions lasted only until something threatened a crop.

“Has Nexo answered?”

Salma minimized the window.

“It is still processing.”

Yun glanced at the uplink indicator. Earth would soon vanish behind the lunar horizon for three hours. Hestia would retain manuals, smaller models, and recordings of past repairs, but not the system that could compare every sensor at once. The contract forbade running it locally, and the farm did not have enough memory anyway.

“Request priority,” Yun said.

“It already has it.”

Teo opened the manifold cabinet. His helmet camera showed six pipes slick with condensation, three actuators, and a snarl of labels added during repairs that appeared on no official drawing.

“The secondary pump is vibrating,” he said.

“Like cavitation?”

“Like something that no longer wants to be a pump.”

“Do not dismantle it yet.”

Teo had already fitted the wrench to a flange. He stopped.

During the first months of training, Salma required technicians to write down a diagnosis before consulting Nexo. The rule delayed every intervention by two to four minutes. Then came the new supply contract. The bonus depended on average repair time, and Yun asked her to remove the friction.

Salma agreed. Nexo turned faults into instructions: open, measure, replace, confirm. Production improved. Teo’s reports looked like the work of someone who had spent years inside the farm.

Two weeks earlier, Salma had asked him to draw the cold loop from memory. Teo placed the pumps and tanks correctly but connected the return to the wrong side of the heat exchanger. He laughed when he saw the mistake.

“That is what Nexo is for,” he said.

Now the seed bank was receiving warmer water by the minute. If the loop failed to recover its flow before the eclipse, the chambers would take hours to cool again. Hestia would not lose its current crop. It would lose part of the next one.

“Put your hand on the pipe leaving the pump,” Salma said.

“It is vibrating.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Teo removed his right glove. Yun opened her mouth to object, but the pipe should not have been dangerously hot. Teo touched the metal and followed its path until he had to kneel.

“Cold after the pump. Warmer before it.”

“What does that tell you?”

“No circulation.”

“We already knew that.”

“You want me to guess what you know.”

Salma looked at Nexo’s answer, motionless on her display.

“I want to know what you will do when I do not know.”

Yun walked toward the console.

“Salma, move.”

She locked the session with her palm. She had not planned to do it. Nor had she planned for Teo’s final lesson to coincide with a real failure. For months she had allowed the company’s urgency and the assistant’s convenience to coincide. These minutes were all she had left to discover what they had produced.

“The uplink is working,” Yun said.

“The answer has not been validated.”

It was a technically possible lie, which made it worse.

Teo crawled beneath the manifold. He began following pipes with his flashlight. Salma told him to forget their names and look for heat. He protested, struck a clamp with his helmet, and kept going. His breath fogged one corner of the camera.

He found the bypass because one of its two sides was warmer than the schematic allowed. The actuator appeared closed, but its shaft protruded three millimeters.

“Seventeen,” he said. “It is leaking return flow.”

Salma opened Nexo’s answer and pressed send. The same instruction appeared in Teo’s visor.

“Now you send it,” he said.

He did not sound pleased.

He fitted the long wrench and tried to close the actuator. The shaft would not move. Nexo recommended relieving the pressure before forcing it. Teo searched for the isolation valve and found it without asking. Salma could not tell whether he had reasoned it out or remembered a recording of another repair.

The seed-bank alarm changed tone. In chamber two, the trays nearest the return line had crossed the preservation limit.

“You are losing the tuber collection,” Yun said.

Salma heard the word *you*. Not *we*.

Teo relieved the branch, closed the bypass, and restarted the secondary pump. The vibration took several seconds to settle. Then cold water began moving through the manifold. On the schematic, blue advanced slowly along lines that had been red for almost half an hour.

The Earth uplink went down with two chambers still recovering. Nexo vanished without ceremony. Teo remained beside the actuator, wrench in hand, until Salma told him he could come back.

They had saved the loop and lost one hundred and eighty-three samples. Some came from crops that survived nowhere outside preservation banks.

Yun waited until Teo entered the control room. Then she replayed the assistant log. The correct answer had arrived seventeen minutes before Salma sent it.

“We could have closed the bypass before losing a single tray,” Yun said.

“Teo would have closed a valve he did not know how to find.”

“Today we needed a closed valve.”

“Four days from now you will need someone who knows why.”

Teo placed the wrench on the table. A red mark crossed the hand he had used to touch the pipe.

“You could have taught me six months ago,” he said.

Salma did not answer.

“You could have fought for the time. You could have taken Nexo away during a simulated failure. You waited until there was something to lose.”

Yun downloaded the assistant log into the incident file. Salma’s suspension was automatic, but no one read the notice aloud. Her access to the consoles was revoked, and she was allowed to finish the shift under supervision.

Teo sat at her station. During the eclipse, the local assistant could do little more than search the manual for matches. The pipe diagram Salma had asked him to draw two weeks earlier was still open on the screen. The return was connected to the wrong side.

“Correct it,” she said.

Teo picked up the stylus but did not touch the display.

“I am going to report that you withheld the answer.”

“You should.”

“I am also going to report that I cannot do the job you certified me to do.”

Yun turned toward him.

“You just repaired the loop.”

“After she decided how much could be destroyed to teach me.”

Teo erased the entire schematic. He did not correct the return. He opened a blank canvas and began with the tanks, then the pumps, then the lines he had touched with his own hands. Salma watched until he drew bypass seventeen.

When he reached the section he had not inspected, he set the stylus down.

“The rest tomorrow,” he said. “In a simulation.”


Scientific note

This story is based on “How AI Assistance Affects Human Skill Development: A Study of Learning with Logic Puzzles”, by Shang Wu, Catarina G. Belem, Shuyuan Fu, Mark Steyvers, and Padhraic Smyth, submitted to arXiv on August 24, 2026 and accepted at HCOMP 2026.

In a controlled study, 124 participants solved ordering puzzles before, during, and after twenty minutes with optional assistance. The help was simulated, always correct, and carried a point cost. Lower-cost help produced more requests. Assisted performance tended to overestimate later performance without it.

The authors’ model associated greater improvement with the share of time spent reasoning independently, rather than the number of requests alone. That relationship is associative. The experiment was brief, used logic puzzles and simulated AI, and does not demonstrate broad or permanent professional deskilling.

Hestia, Nexo, and the failure are fictional, as is the extension to critical maintenance. The story dramatizes one design proposal discussed by the authors: requiring initial attempts, delaying help, or providing partial hints so assistance supports rather than replaces reasoning.
